About the Business

North Elmham Chapel | English Heritage | A place with an unusual story, told by graphic panels. The small Norman chapel here stood on the site of an earlier timber church, probably the Saxon cathedral of East Anglia.

Clean and maintained Norman ruins of a chapel later fortified to castlette. Built on site of former Saxon cathedral. Unmanned, free admission, informative signs and excellent views

Nice small ruins with free parking for approx 4-5 cars. If you come for the ruins only, you will only be here 20 mins max. 5 star review is for the meadows and millennium woods at the back of the ruins. The meadows at the back are really secure fields, three in total, decreasing in size and perfect for letting your dog off for a run. Signs on the gates says dogs on leads but spoke with several dog owners who all said that they let them off. Only thing I would say is check that the farmer is not using them for livestock before you let them off. Spent a good hour here and the dogs loved it.

Well worth a visit. Not large but plenty standing, nice fields to walk in nearby and access to disused railway line down the bottom.

A small Norman ruin in Elmham, just outside of Dereham. There is a small carpark next to the town church where you can access the ruins.Plenty of information signs telling you what you are looking at.Paths surrounding the ruins can be walked in about 10 minutes. This is not a day out. It is a quick stop attraction. However, there is a path that leads off into a lower field where you can walk down to see an old disused railway line. We often see pheasants and buzzards when walking this track down to, and then back up to the chapel ruins. This will add about 30 minutes to your time spent at the site. This attraction by its nature is not easily accessible if you are reliant on wheelchair access or have impaired mobility.

This is the site of the first Cathedral in East Anglia until 1071 before moving to Thetford and then onto Norwich . Bishop Herbert de Losinga built a stone Chapel on the site of the old wooden Cathedral which these remains are from . It was later converted into a castle for Henry le Despenser in the late 14th century . For a geek like me this place was very worth visiting though alas just ruins left standing . Herbert de Losinga can be found buried in Norwich Cathedral and if you ask the guides they can tell you some very interesting tales about the chap .

Nice dog walk with parking. Fenced in so dogs can't get to the sheep. Can get muddy when it rains but as long as you dress appropriately it's fine.

Beautiful and Serene, the challenge ruins next door were amazing and the walks from the ruins through the countryside were delightful. The site and parking were free access.
