About the Business

St Davids Bishop's Palace | Cadw | Magnificent medieval palace that rivalled its cathedral for gloryThere was only one top job for an ambitious cleric in medieval Wales: Bishop of St Davids in Pembrokeshire.A 12th-century pope had decreed that two trips to St Davids were equal to one to Rome – turning it into a centre of pilgrimage for the entire Western world. Thousands flocked to see the shrine of St David in the newly built cathedral.

A really nice old building in various states of repair, we entered free using Scottish HES cards and were given a really warm welcome by the staff and were allowed to wander and view the property, there are speaking descriptions of various rooms that help you to understand the how the building was built and used.Well worth a visit, you can combine it with a visit to the Cathedral and the picturesque city.

What a majestic place this is, the combination of the palace and the cathedral, splendid! We loved wandering through the palace ruins and trying to imagine how life must have been. We think some of the parts could have done with a little bit more information but the signs that were around were very interesting.

Although it is a ruin, there is still plenty to see and enjoy at this very special site. You'll only need about an hour to see everything, but it's surprising how quickly that hour will pass if you stop to take everything in and soak up the atmosphere. The displays are interesting presented, and the maze like undercroft is a joy to explore.Beware though, some of the steps and passages are very narrow, and despite the archways being painted white for safety, it's easy to bang your head if you're not careful.

£5 PP to get in which is a good start. Friendly and helpful staff in the shop / ticket office. Loads of information boards including commentary in most of the rooms of the old ruins. Some of the staircases are very narrow spirals so good footwear is a plus for the visit. Grounds are very well kept too.

Down the hill from the cathedral is a reasonably well interpreted ruin of the Bishop’s Palace.Bear in mind that many people keep posting pictures of the cathedral which are not pictures the partly ruined palace. It has a reasonable amount of information signs, still has multiple levels in most places, and although it has an entry fee the fee was pretty mild compared to most places. Pop past while you’re there to see the cathedral.

I miscalculated my schedule so was only able to spend three hours here. Luckily that means I can come back. Absolutely magnificent site, with St David's Cathedral as well as the remnants of the old Bishop's Palace. Set down the slope with a small stream separating them, it's hard to appreciate the majesty of both areas. I cannot wait to return, this site is now a top five favorite.

Enjoy our visit to the St David's cathedral. Missed the chance to go inside as the doors closed from 1.30pm and reopen from 2.30pm.Walked around the grounds, enjoyed the greens and the stream. There is a gift shop but did not go inside.
