My boyfriend went to look at a car yesterday - after a test drive it was clear that a wheel bearing had gone. We asked if we could either knock down price to get the wheel bearing fixed or if we could pay full price & have the dealer fix it - attitude was ‘no, if you buy the car it’s your problem.’ Turns out someone else was interested in the car and clearly had not noticed the wheel bearing issue, meaning the dealer could sell it to them without having work done. Shockingly unethical, since the wheel can easily buckle! And not the right attitude for selling cars!Following the dealers response -1. To scan the car, the car needs to be running, and therefore permission would have to be asked. The car was scanned while a customer service operator was watching2. The scan tests the engine - the faulty wheel bearing was found during a test drive by my boyfriends father, who is an experienced mechanic3. The MOT certificate only served to reduce our confidence in your MOT provider, hence why we asked to check it ourselves. Excessive movement on a wheel bearing is an MOT failure. As customers we reserve the right to ensure a product is not faulty before we buy.4. There were several discussions on price both in person and over the phone. We would have happily bought the car at a reduced price to compensate for the work needed (and necessary to ensure the safety of the car).5. We were acting as genuine customers - my boyfriend is now the proud owner of a car of the same make and model (bought from a different dealer) which he is very happy with. We have just used it to go camping in Cornwall over the weekend and it has been brill

Friends Autos do not get their cars checked by mechanics before advertising for sale. They knowingly sell cars which have faults. Currently going through a small claims case with them as they refused to repair the car when I contacted trading standards and citizens advice, they have not replied to letters or the court by the deadline meaning bailiffs will have to become involved at greater cost to me. Not the first case trading standards have been made aware of against this business either. Please be mindful and get any car purchased checked out independently.
