St John the Baptist Church, Alderford
The tower of this church is visible above the trees as you drive through the village, but it's hard to find the way in. Look hard and you will find some steps hidden behind a tiny gap in the tall hedge. The only access to this church is by means of these steep steps directly from the road. There is no footpath along the narrow lane, nor does there appear to be any parking nearby. The church appears mostly fourteenth century, with a mix of window styles. It is locked, details of key holder are on the notice board in the porch. Standing on tiptoe, it's possible to see through the windows into a simply furnished church. Whilst the path to the church is clear, it is obvious that there are few human visitors; just two trails weave their way in different directions through the long grass to graves. There is an air of neglect, nature attempts to grow over the building and graves, letters are missing from the sundial above the porch, doors and windows need attention. But there is a magic here. Such a variety of wildflowers in the churchyard as you enjoy the tranquility.
