About the Business

The National Telephone Kiosk Collection @ Avoncroft, part of The Communications Museum Trust | The National Telephone Kiosk Collection at Avoncroft Museum is arguably the UKs most complete telecommunications museum where visitors can get a complete history of the public telephone service with a working telephone network connected to four telephone exchanges and every type of telephone kiosk used from 1912 to the present day. The K6 is the most popular red box first introduced in 1935, although the K2 was the first red box to be introduced, design by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Police boxes such as the Tardis made famous by Dr Who were used before the introduction of the 999 service to give quick access to the emergency services.

Interesting to see all types of phone boxes including an Internet only box. Has a small working phone exchange & in normal times it is possible to go in the phone boxes to make calls to the other boxes. Not sure about interest value for small children but as it is a small part of Avoncroft outdoor museum the whole site has something for everyone.

The National Telephone Kiosk Collection is housed within the Avoncroft Museum but is separate (included within regular admission though). Most people don't give a second thought to telephone kiosks but the guides (interpreters) at the Collection breathe life into its history for their visitors - special thank you to Tony for being so enthusiastic and friendly.

If you're into history or telephones this place will be like heaven. Seriously, it's part of the Avoncroft museum, which is a great family day out and very different to most places I've been. Definitely check out Avoncroft if you want a quality family day out.
