Tafarn-y-Garreg Pub and Camping
Racist owners.I don’t usually write reviews, but if I’d been warned about the racist landlords, I wouldn’t have visited.Came in here the first weekend of September as was camping nearby. I had originally planned to camp at Tafarn y Garreg - thank goodness that didn’t work out.Andy, the owner, was at first very friendly. He came over to me and my boyfriend and spoke to us about things to do nearby. The other locals also were friendly, asking us where we were from etc. We were sat at a table next to some locals and the landlord. At one point, one of the group said about it being an ‘Indian summer’, to which the landlord replied: ‘no, it’s going to be a p___ (derogatory, racist slur) summer.’About 10 minutes later, when the landlord had gone into the pub, I went in and told him how what he had said made me feel uncomfortable because 1. I have no time for racism and 2. I am part Asian myself and my dad suffered racist abuse growing up in the UK. Andy spouted the usual stuff you hear from a racist - he has Asian friends so it’s ok, he didn’t mean it like that etc etc. It wasn’t a heated conversation, but it was extremely difficult speaking to someone so ignorant. Andy’s partner, who is white, had been lurking and came over and started saying how even though they get called ‘honkytonks’ they’re not allowed to get annoyed about it. I almost laughed - I find it hard to believe that in the UK, let alone the very white Brecon Beacons, anybody gets called that. Also, racism 101 - white people haven’t quite got the same history when it comes to racism. Anyway, I was trying to explain racism, what it is, why it’s bad..like you would to a young child, not a conversation you expect to have with middle aged pub owners. That’s when the n word started being thrown around. Andy was saying how he calls his black friends it and vice Versa. Andy’s partner was also using the word and I had to ask them to stop. Andy’s delightful partner then went on to say that back in her day you could call anyone anything you wanted. Lovely. Sounds to me like she thought she could call people what she wanted and didn’t care how much it hurt them. Eventually, she stood between me and Andy and said this isn’t going anywhere. I’d had enough, so me and my boyfriend swiftly left and went down to the Gwyn Arms - where we spoke to the landlord who was lovey and we didn’t hear any racism - hurrah! There are so many nice pubs around this area where you hopefully won’t have to experience things like this - save yourself the frustrating conversations about why we shouldn’t use slurs / outright racist language, walk 6 mins down the road to the Gwyn Arms and have a drink in the nice garden. Tafarn y Garreg is the worst pub I’ve been to and ran by the vilest, most ignorant landlords I’ve ever come across.

Tafarn-y-Garreg Pub and Camping
Walked to the pub with two very noisy sausage dogs. Asked if they could come in so I could order a pint, answer yes no problem. Ordered pint dogs doing woof woof woof. I said I'll go outside, answer it's OK you don't need to, brilliant pub. I went out side under aa huge brollie. 5 star service.

Lovely little pub with an open fire. Let us sit inside when it was originally all shut down as we'd been trekking all day and the pint was amazing after walking 8miles in 28c heat!
