About the Business

Charnwood Lodge | Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust | At nearly 200 hectares, this beautiful nature reserve abounds with ancient history, atmosphere and wildlife. Grasslands support an array of butterflies in the summer, whilst the woodlands burst with birdsong in the spring, and turn fiery golden in the autumn. Prominent 600 million-year-old Precambrian rock outcrops protrude through the surrounding marl and other Triassic deposits.

Good place to walk with many paths. Muddy in places after heavy rain so best in boots from Oct. Moor and woodlands with rocky outcrops makes for a varied interesting area.

Charnwood Lodge National Nature Reserve
A fantastic reserve which has a fantastic range of wildlife since most of the reserve is lowland heath which is a rare habitat in Leicestershire. It also have some great examples of birch woodland with a wide range of fungi in the Autumn. It seemed to be very quiet on our first visit and it is a large reserve for Leicestershire at least with plenty of paths to go down and explore.

Excellent Nature Reserve. Great UK Countryside, but follow the Permissive Path. Lots of rocks & boggy ground. Wear walking boots. Great climbing. Dogs must be kept on leads.

Charnwood Lodge National Nature Reserve
Lovely hilltop rocky reserve with super views on clear days. Not particularly large (you can walk the perimeter in 20 minutes) but great to walk the dog or take time out. Can get muddy after the rain. Parking is limited in adjacent lay-bys.
