Fowlmere Aerodrome Memorial

RAF Fowlmere & USAAF Fowlmere both operated from this Aerodrome during the Second World War. Fowlmere was a satalite airfield for Duxford and during the Battle of Britain No 19 Squadron (the first to use the new Supermarine Spitfires) used this aerodrome as well as Duxford. Following the entry of the USA in to the war Fowlmere became the base for the P51 Mustangs. Fowlmere was used as early as 1918 and the United States Army Air Service were trained here after WW1. 10 other squadrons were based here leading up to the handing over of the aerodrome to the USAAF, before that took place Fowlmere had 2 RAF Canadian and an RAF Eagle Squadron based at Fowlmere.After the handover the 339th Fighter Group consisting of 3 Fighter Squadrons for the USAAF arrived at Fowlmere in April 1944; 503d, 504th & 505th Fighter Squadrons under the 66th Fighter Wing of the VIII Fighter Command whose main role was bomber escort of the Boeing B-17 & the Consolidated B24 Liberator long rang bombers.After the Americans withdrew from Fowlmere the RAF No 11 Group RAF Fighter Command took over Fowlmere untill 1946.My personal score is 10/10 & I also award the Fowlmere Memorial my Gold Star for Excellence.

My wife, Mum and myself have just spent a very enjoyable time looking at the museum, all involved were very informative and its clear a great amount of time and love has been taken in the setting up of this little gem. Well worth a visit
