St Mary's Church, Whitkirk

A beautiful church. Would like to visit more often.

St Mary's church, Whitkirk is just a short walk from my home and because of that it is easy to forget the relevance and interest that such places bring to an area.Steeped in history, there has been a church on this site since AD1185 and it is believed that possibly a Saxon church before that of wood construction to be later replaced by stone which is probably why it is referenced as Whitechurche in a charter of Henri de Laci bestowing land to the Knights Templar around 1154. The font is a single piece of Magnesium limestone and has been identified as being from the same quarry that provided stone for York Minster.On a sunny day the church looks quite splendid nestled on the edge of the Temple Newsam estate.

My aunt and uncle got married here in the mid sixties and my cousin their daughter is about to do the same

We attended the Remembrance Sunday service, very poignant with a fine thought provoking sermon. Well attended. Fitting tribute

Stunning church and place of worship.

So pleased that this marvellous place of worship is on my doorstep. Lovely memories of my two daughters taking their wedding vows there. Also said my farewell goodbye to my mum there. The Xmas eve crib service has been a family must for us for a long time.
