I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger Victoria Street

Loved this place so much we came back 2 days later. Received excellent advice from the staff on different cheeses to try, & also got some lovely sourdough, strawberries, & skyr that fed us for days. Also really loved their oatcakes.

This shop is amazing, I love the selection of cheeses and quince, and the staff let you try a sliver of cheese if you are unsure before buying. Also sells delicious but limited numbers of bread loaves, some meat charcuterie type items, a lot of Jams and preserves to go with the cheese and a very extensive range of oatcakes. There's often a queue to get in!

Thank goodness there are several I.J. Mellis cheese shops in Edinburgh. I’m very familiar with the one located on Victoria St., just up from The Grassmarket. Upon entering, your senses are overwhelmed by wonderful aromas of all the numerous cheeses on display. All are clearly identified with the prices. If you’re unsure, tastings are available and the staff are all so knowledgeable. A bonus are all the breads, crackers and bottles of wine on sale. After 7 trips to Edinburgh, we make sure the hotel fridge is stocked and a pre-dinner app is always enjoyed. For a momento, I purchased this linen shopping bag.

The best cheese shop I've ever been to! I.J. Mellis offers a wide variety of fresh cheese and cured meats along with other small accoutrements. Plus, they offer personal size sampler platters with 4 - 6 different cheese, crackers, and a jam spread.

Cheese lover’s heaven! A small place, but packed with artisan cheeses and everything to go with them (wine, chutney, crackers, etc). The artisan cheese prices are good compared to America. This shop always seemed to be busy and the staff is incredibly efficient and helpful.

Upon nearing the door, your nose is hit with the glorious smell of decadent cheeses. A surprisingly large selection of local and continental cheese packed into a tiny space. Highly recommended.

Every time I visit Edinburgh I have to stop here!Last Sunday a friend of mine and I walked past and noticed they offered a whisky tasting with cheese pairing for £20. Best thing we did all weekend!The young man who served us was friendly, enthusiastic and well informed about all things cheese and whisky. Was a great experience and would do it again!

We visited I.J. Mellis during our first vacation to Edinburgh, and it was a highlight of our trip! The staff member who attended us was extremely polite, friendly, and took the time to provide explanations on each of the cheeses, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Each portion of cheese we purchased was carefully wire-cut, and artfully packaged. We purchased the Hebriden Blue, Isle of Mull Cheddar, Langanory, and Cottage Gouda - all delicious and unique.

Great cheeses, albeit more on the expensive side, but really good. Service also good as well as its location. Good thing you can take them well packed to your country, in my case, Portugal, because they cannot ship outside the UK.

Really friendly and knowledgeable staff at this extraordinary cheesemonger.Nice easy location at the famous West Bow Street. The staff was so kind and had a great sense of humour.They knew alot especially when I just walked in and asked for a creamy buttery textured cheese, they knew exactly what to give me.They give you a sample to try as well so your not forced into buying.Their cheese toasties are amazing. Big portion with a dollop of chutney in it but it is £6. To be honest I didn't mind paying it because of the great people that work their but if it was me I'd charge £5. Anyway it was a very satisfy lunch.They even have mini tables outside their tiny shop so you can sit and eat. But look at the pictures first before you thing its a normal seating area lol. I actually think it's quit cute and charming and wouldn't mind sitting for a quick toastie.Really happy with my cheese round purchase. I bought a truffle manchego hard cheese and a creamy Brillat Savarin.
