Solent Amateur Astronomers Observatory

Amazing place, located on a Toothill just outside Southampton, but curiously free of much light pollution. It's located inside a wood, with no street lighting or buildings close by, obviously for the need of darkness. For people travelling via M27 Junction 3, the path the satnav suggests is via a narrow unmaintained road, with not many passing spaces for oncoming vehicles. Since the travel is in the night, this isn't quite easy: we made sure to research first and take the slightly longer path via Rownhams Lane, which is much wider, better lit and better maintained.We are a family of four, children aged 10 and 6. They both loved it as much as the adults - there's a lot to learn and see. Many helpful people in the society who go out of the way to help and educate you. There are a few reasonably good telescopes which are accessible to general public on open public days. The people there will guide you through, and they are genuinely happy to help you. They even distribute printed leaflets.The suggested donation is £5 per non-member adults and children go free. Totally worth it for that price!Open days are announced on their website and Facebook page, and the events are subject to the weather, obviously something beyond their control. Luckily the day we finally visited was almost cloudless, and we were treated to amazing views of the sky.We will definitely visit again and are thinking of purchasing the membership.

So much to see and to learn from the Solent Astronomers !! It's very nice for both adults and youngs. Bring family and friends you will have a different experience full of learning !

Went here many years ago no light pollution.Hence a beautiful clear sky, well worth a visit.
