Presumably bronze.A name I grew up with as a hero against the South African Apartheid (racial segregation). Seen as part of the international resistance against Apartheid, Matthews was the 1st person to form his All Black Sowetto football team called Stan's Men". He then took them out of South Africa to Brazil to play football against the Brazilian team. Another 1st!But for footie fans much loved and respected here abouts as a local hero & "Magician" of the game.Has a plant stall at the back of it some days which sets it off nicely."

I have to give 5 stars to anything that relates to the great Sir Stanley Mathews, even though he never played for the team I support. It might be a diminutive statue in the middle of a shopping precinct, but it shows the respect the local people have for one of their own. It's said that the statue's football has been stolen a few times and people jokingly say that was the only way you could get the ball off Stanley Mathews.
