Unfortunately we had a really disappointing experience. We’d booked a table for a pre theatre meal, the food took 50 minutes to arrive for 3 people. Once the food arrived the staff were never seen again. The food itself was nice, but not worth the wait, just typical good pub food. The experience got worse when we went to the toilet. The stairs down to the cellar were pitch black. One toilet was completely blocked and the water was off so we were unable to wash our hands, there were two bottles of hand sanitizer provided which is not sufficient to clean your hands. Completely unacceptable.

I went with my partner for a Sunday lunch and the food was really nice, we both had belly pork which is a nice variety to many other carvery restaurants that just do normal pork. The portions on the Sunday dinner and the pudding were just right, not too much to make you stuffed and bloated but not too little either. Thanks for a lovely meal

Had steak an ale pie, rump steak and gammon- meals were delicious, mash and vegetables were great, fresh and tasty. Food was reasonably priced and was served within good time.As previous reviewer, 2 large glasses of rose wine cost over £17 which we thought was expensive, but apparently that's just city centre prices.Staff were very friendly and helpful but once main meal was received they were too busy to offer good follow on service. We will go back however when next at theatre.

Had steak an ale pie - it was delicious, just a tad overdone on the top pastry. The chips and vegetables were also very tasty, but the swede was unfortunately rock hard. Food was reasonably priced and was served within good time.2 large glasses of red wine cost over £17 which I thought was hideously expensive, but apparently that's just Leeds prices ??? (It's been a while since I've been out in the city centre!)Staff were very friendly and there was nice outdoor seating with heating.

Went for tea before going to see a gig at city varieties at 7.30. We have been here several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. However this time the service was inexcusable. We arrived at 6, food came after 7pm. We had told the staff we were going to the theatre and asked how long food would be, told “they’re plating now” well no they weren’t!!! We watched a nearby table that arrived and ordered after us get their food before us. 2 of my friends rushed their food but I could not, meaning my rump steak which was actually beautifully cooked went to waste. I would think again before visiting for tea before the theatre.

Awful service! Cold food! I reserved a table 16.45pm for four last night Saturday. Ordered food 5 mins later. Waited until 17.30 food had not arrived, checked at the bar. No apology or reason? 17.35 a server asked if we'd like more drinks. I said that we have been waiting 50mins for our food order and asked if drinks could be free! The server walked away and didn't come back. 17.45 another server asked if we'd like more drinks, after I mentioned the above, she apologised and our food came to the table 10 mins later. 1hour 5 min wait for our meals!! Unacceptable. To add insult my fish was dry, the five big potatoes chunks were cold and the mushy very dark green peas in a tiny ramikin looked wiered and unpalatable. My friends Potatoes were cold and sliced leeks uncooked and her tiny sausage was warm. My other friend had the smallest amount of mushroom resotto in her bowl, prob a ladle full. I did complain. 20% off because we had been to theatre which was sorted out before when I booked the table at 13.00 and not charged for a couple of drinks.. Tbh it was a waste of time and will not drink or eat here again and will tell others to give it a wide birth, unless they are desperate.

Been a couple of times while on shopping trips from Sheffield, been great for food and service,Went to call in for a meal while out shopping on a friday ,pub wasn’t particularly busy, so found a table and sat down, took our coats off and began to look through menu, only for a waitress to come up to us a few minutes later to tell us that they don’t serve food to walk in customers, you have to book a table,, what a load of bull, it’s a city centre pub down an alley for gods sake, not a Michelin restaurant, every time we’ve been we were walk in customers so why have this stupid policy now, won’t be going there again, and no doubt many more won’t be either if they’ve been told the same thing. Very bad policy you now have there and it will end up costing you dearly.

Long time since going in here - Popped in for a pre-show drink and decided to have some food as it looked good coming out!! - wasn't disappointed at all with the decision - hadn't booked and staff were great, helpful, good service, checked back twice, food very good for what is a city centre 'boozer' style of pub. Will definitely be back. Thanks

Historic pub, behind city varieties. On day of visit comprehensive selection of beers. Helpful bar person too. A must on a pub tour.

The staff was really friendly, but the food didn't live up to expectations. The roast beef Sunday dinner was very plain, and the meat was overcooked, requiring a replacement. The portion size of the meat was very small (you get one piece), and for the price, it didn't seem like a good deal, especially considering the better quality and larger portions available at neighboring pubs and restaurants. I wouldn't choose to dine there again.
