Red Tower

The tower dates back to 1490. It is the only brick built tower on the medieval city walls. Originally was a watchtower part of a larger programme of improvements to the city’s defences ordered by Richard III and completed by his successor, Henry VII.

Been to York many times, but never done the wall walk until Sunday 3rd November. It's a good walk. Sometimes a bit scary, as the railings don't go all the way round, and the path does thin out in parts. But we enjoyed it, and then had lunch in one of the pubs in the shambles. The only thing that we thought it needed was better signage. When you come off at one of the breaks in the wall, there are no directions as where to get back on. But we found it eventually with the help of the lady in Clifford's tower. We did notice that there were leaflets at one of the places we came off, probably with a map inside. We just got on at the wrong place, but still enjoyed seeing the sites from up there.

More of a Red House but I’ll be forgiving as it was built in 1490 and on a moat that’s no longer there.

Nice spot for those interested in history. An old house that used to serve as a guard tower in 1493, serving for other purposes afterwards.

The city walls made for a lovely walk around the city, some bits missing, so follow the map better than we did to join it again! Great views of the Minster

Not sure if it's worthy of a review particularly, but it is an interesting and ancient brick built tower, on the walls of York.

Currently it is under repairs, but there is still access to the wall by a temporary structure as you walk around. Please mind your head as you access the temporary steps.

Walk the wall very enjoyable experience walking the York city wall, you get great view of the surrounding sites of York, you wouldn't normally see, Well worth making the effort to do whilst in York and it's free.

This part of the york city walls starts on Foss Island Road & ends at Walmgate. There is no fencing on this section.
