We have been coming to the islands for many years. However, the travel experience has become horrendous in the last few years.Disembarking the Scillonian in Penzance is unbelievably frustrating. The staff treat the passengers like cattle.A young man was close to missing his train, and despite being able to see his bag the staff refused to pass it to him until every single bag had been unloaded from the boat. They shouted and got angry at him and refused to unload any more bags until he moved away, this is despite all the heavy machinery being at the other end of the quay. There was no risk to him or anyone else. All the people on the quay were urging the staff to pass it to him and they refused. It was aggressive, jobsworth behaviour and utterly unpleasant to witness. We later saw the man at the station trying to work out how to get back to London from Penzance having missed the last train of the day. These islands are utterly reliant on summer tourism. People are willing to travel huge distances to come to experience the magic of the islands. Inhuman behaviour by staff in this service will slowly and surely make the trip not worthwhile and the islands will be left with nothing but people coming in via helicopter to timeshare houses.

Wow, what an experience. The day started in Penzance car park, got there early to grab a breakfast at the cafe. Hop on to transfer bus and after a pleasant ride we arrived at Lands End Airport. Great views of aircraft being prepared, no more than 50ft away through a large glass viewing window. Following a short flight briefing we climb onto the aircraft. Quite intimate, one couple had their dog in a secure pen in front of them. Once airborne it was a short flight out over the sea. You can the runway as you approach the island, the aircraft goes into a decent, you won’t experience this on an airliner, and from our seats we could observe the sea getting closer. A last minute level out and a perfect landing. Declining the available taxis we decided to walk to the harbour area. We explored the fort above the harbour, now a hotel, and could not resist a drink whilst in this amazing location with panoramic views of the islands beyond. We had overheard on our way over that at best you would only be able to take in an excursion to one other island in the time you have on a day trip. There is a local round island bus ride, not really a tour but the driver was keen to share his knowledge and it’s very cheap. The sea journey back brings the day to a tiring end, if it has exhausted you, there is a quiet room down in the depths where you can rest. Otherwise take in the sights, great views as you leave the archipelago, then possibly sights of dolphin and other sea goers. Watch out for Minack Theatre as you follow the coast back to Penzance. On board there is ample opportunity to buy refreshments. A great day and wonderful memory.
