St. Mary's Churchyard
St. Mary's churchyard was the burial ground for St. Mary's church, which stood on the corner of air street and bank side. It was formerly the parish church of the village of sculcoats. Dating back to 1380. According to Bulmer's history and directory of East Yorkshire 1892, the old church had become so decayed that it was taken down in 1760. It was replaced by a new church in a Gothic style, consisting of a nave, chancery side isles, and a tower of four stages entirely encased in compo. The East window was filled with stained glass representing the crucifixion. Nothing now remains of the church. The churchyard is totally neglected and overgrown with trees and bushes a haven for wildlife, a small Oasis in the heart of an industrial area. There are some interesting gravestones and monuments.
