Bryn-y-Rhyd Standing Stone
A prehistoric standing stoneThe monument comprises of a very large unshaped standing stone located in the middle of an enclosed field towards the bottom of a SE facing slope on a terrace overlooking a watercourse. The stone measures c. 2.45m tall, 2.1m wide and 0.5m thick. It is aligned E-W. The stone is earthfast. It is roughly rectangular in shape on plan and in section. It rises to a flat top with a slight central point. The surface of the stone is notable for its distinctive layering. The standing stone is thought to be of religious or ceremonial significance and to date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC). The monument is likely to retain significant archaeological deposits and enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The scheduling has been revised as the original scheduled area was marked with a 'X' on the paper map. The entry required modernisation to make it compatible with Cadw's GIS.The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 10m in diameter.Source: Cadw
