Marshalsea Prison South Wall
There's nothing to see here. The building no longer exists, so there's just some plaques on the wall. It's unclear whether the gates and wall of the adjacent park were part of the prison or not.

Although there’s only an old high wall with gates that remain of the prison, the site is a sobering reminder of what happened to people who couldn’t pay their debts in Victorian England.

While it may only be one remaining wall of the prison, it is interesting to get a feel for how it would have felt walking up that pathway and going through the gates and putting yourself in the shoes of those who were imprisoned. Definitely worth reading up about and going to see the wall for yourself.

Although there is only a wall remaining of the old prison I was determined to follow Little Dorrit's daily walk from the prison to Covent Garden then in the evening before the curfew bell sounded would head home (she was born in the Marshalsea) cross old London Bridge . I found it a most inspiring experience and so many other interesting places nearby.

Not much remains of the prison that at one time housed Charles Dickens' dad, but the churchyard adjoining the remains is a green haven in the middle of Southwark and does have a truly impressive London Plane tree.

This is part of Charles Dicken's childhood story. His father was held in the debtors prison on this site, and he would visit him here regularly. Only the walls remain, but within them is a tranquil place to sit amongst trees and grass for a while before heading back to the hustle of Borough High Street. You could visit the local John Harvard Public Library on the High Street, where there's a wealth of local history to be read in the room at the rear, for free. You just need to sign in on arrival. It is a good idea to check on their opening hours beforehand.

My dad John Dickens was thrown in jail for having debt. He told me he hated it
