The Black Buoy
Terrible experience at the Black Buoy. The Sunday menu is ridiculously small which is a slight pain but the food we had was nice. Online they advertise that the bar snack menu is served 12-5 Sundays but we arrived and was told this wasn’t the case - nonetheless we overlooked this. The service was actually atrocious, a member of my party was called fussy by the waitress for asking for extra gravy, and asked “did he even taste it” in regards to the speed which he ate his dessert. You could consider these a joke if you had had a good rapport with your server, but ours had been incredibly abrasive and made us feel like an annoyance just for being there. The service felt very cold, very unfriendly, and when our desserts had clearly been forgotten about we weren’t issued so much as an apology. Such a shame as it’s in such a lovely spot but you couldn’t pay me to return and be greeted with such rudeness. Let down.

My partner and I had a lovely lunch thisnafternoon. He had fish l, chips and a side of peas and I had burger, chips and a side salad. Both equally as lovely. We sat in the garden, I was able to sit inn shade while my partner sat in the sun so we got the best of both worlds. Lovely people behind the bar and also lovely lady that served us. We would go back for sure.

Had roast beef sunday lunch. The beef was very chewy could not eat half of it, came as one thick slice, roast potatoes not nice at all, not crispy. The veg was fine, but its veg. Had to ask for Horseradish ect. Young person behind bar was very confused when i tried to order two flat white coffees? didnt know what they were. When we got the bill asked the young girl to split it by two and she could not work out so we just rounded it up. Poor experience.

Horrible establishment! I’m a local and used to love this place but it’s honestly just gone down hill! New manager is absolutely horrible and the standard of food now is atrocious. Would not recommend unless you want an awful night, I’d of never said this before but there’s much better places in wivenhoe !

Went for Sunday lunch which was delicious. Great variety of meat options + vegan offer was amazing. Couldn't fault service or food - will definitely be back!

The vegan fish and chips were lovely and obviously home made so really nice addition- but could have been a thinner piece of tofu and actually have tasted nicer

Lovely village pub/eatery, pleasant staff, great local atmosphere, unable to judge the food as at 3.00 on a Saturday afternoon the kitchen was closed due to staff shortages , but overall a great place for a couple of pints and very dog friendly too

We stopped for lunch. The staff were friendly, and the food was very good. We had the loaded chips, and each had a sandwich for lunch. I had a couple of pints of Colchester #1, a local brewery ale.Definitely recommend.

Loved the window seating and the helpful staff. They put up with all our questions and were very attentive. Great relaxed atmosphere with a small bar and lots of tables. The food was delicious and got to try the Colchester #1 after walking up the footpath from Colchester. Didn't even realise there was a local beer until the server brought it up! Excellent cask pull draught to go with their wild chips and tuna melt.Didn't get to check out the beer garden, but it looked great and relaxing! Dog friendly place and a few people brought their pups in while we were there. Always fun to get some puppy love after a good meal.
