Southmead Maternity

After being originally booked at st michaels I feel beyond lucky they were fully booked and I was able to have the most amazing experience at Southmead!I have never used the maternity services here before but straight away I was welcomed in by all the midwife’s working, I was reassured regarding my worries around delivering on delivery suite after a horrible second birth, everything was explained throughly and the midwife went above and beyond to make me feel relaxed!The birth itself was very quick but I was allowed to be in any position I wanted and again everything was explained what was happening throughout. After birth I was left to bond with baby before all the checks and extras needed doing.I felt properly cared for, nothing was rushed and I didn’t know till after how busy the unit was.On the ward staff are just as helpful and friendly and again I was talking through where everything was and shown where i could get water and snacks.I highly recommend Southmead as a place for birth after two st mikes births and a home birth this is by far the best experience I have had and the cafe really is next level!Thankyou to everyone involved in the 12.2.22

This Place is the most professional and caring maternity hospital. I have never felt safer. I've been in for a week and mostly likely several more to follow.I have never experienced such regular and great care. Communication between staff is amazing and I cannot express enough how wonderful they've made this horrible time for me and my family, so much more manageable. 3rd child. Thanks everyone. Thanks NHS

I have two children solely because of their wonderful staff getting me through two very difficult pregnancies. What better review can a maternity service have?!! Any shortcomings are not due to the staff or the hospital - it is down the the system and lack of support for our struggling NHS. These fantastic heroic fabulous humans need our appreciation and kindness - we will forever be so thankful to Southmead hospital for the rest of our lives.

Thank you so much to the Delivery department ( the whole delivery team, starting from assistants to the consultants). I had emergency C-section at 3AM (baby H decided to go out week earlier). The whole team was wonderful and caring, very professional and cheerful.We can’t thank you enough for the whole procedure, you all made me feel safe.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to give birth here. Apart from a few very nice members of staff, the rest are a big disappointment and dangerously so. I’m grateful my wife and baby are now home and away from their lack of care.

This is a horrible place to come if the doctor sends you here for check up if there are concerns during pregnancy. First time me and my wife spent 8 hours. The second time we spent nearly 6 hours after our doctor told us it would be 30 minutes. I was hearing similar stories from other patients there.If you ever get sent here, pack a bag with food and and drink as there are only a couple of expensive vending machines and expect to wait a long time.

I needed an overnight stay here to get something checked out, and while they are very very busy, they made sure I was extremely well looked after. It's clean, and seemed well run. The staff were reassuring and attentive throughout the day and night. Also, you hear horror stories about hospital food - I really enjoyed it! Thank you to everyone working there who helped when I hadn't had time to prepare any change of clothes or toiletries.

By far the best experience visiting a hospital I've ever had.The staff were polite, competent and lovely and we got the impression they really cared about us and our baby. (We found completely the opposite at St. Michael's, so switched hospitals & I'm so pleased we did.)The maternity ward, waiting room and reception was easy to find, and was a lovely space to wait in. I was so impressed. And so grateful for all the kindness of the staff. Thank you.

I arrived on the 6th of December with my partner for her to be induced. Over the next few days we were back a few more times before our son was born on the 9th. Given that this was at a peak in Covid rates in Bristol and the staff were under an enormous workload of pregnant women, I was very impressed by the commitment, professionalism and care given here. Staff were attentive and kept us updated throughout our time there.One thing I would say to anyone reading this, is remember this is an active ward that sees dozens if not hundreds of women every day. There are more staff in the daytime than at night. Some women need urgent care so you may not always be the #1 priority. The midwives are human and can forget things if you don't remind them. If you enter here with a degree of realism then you will be pleasantly surprised by your time here. If you come expecting everyone to stop what they're doing and come attend to you instantly -you're in for a rude awakening.

I think everyone in Southmead Maternity Unit is absolutely fantastic. My baby was delivered by c section on 26.10.23 after being in and out for 2 days and I could not fault the care I recieved in theater, just before and for another nearly 4 days after. Everyone was fantastic from consultants, anesthesiologists, surgeons, obstrectritians, nurses, midwives, and all assistants involved in delivery of baby known as Sausage"
