Wishing Steps
These steps, in short flights of three and located on the city wall where it descends towards the River Dee, were constructed in the late 18th century to improve access to the riverside promenade. Nobody knows for certain how they got their name, but according to local legend, young unmarried girls hoping for a marriage proposal would run up and down the steps while holding their breath and their wish would be granted! I love walking this stretch of the wall, with its beautiful views of the river. A bit further on, another flight of steps (called the Recorder's Steps) takes you down to the boat landings, bandstand and riverside cafes.
