Ian Davidson Vocal Coach

Ian has been my vocal coach since late August 2013 and so far I have had about 10 lessons. I was a complete novice, and at the time of writing (December 2013) I have made incredible progress thanks to Ian's guidance, enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of the theory and practice of singing.The first lesson involved an introduction to the 'mechanics' of the human voice followed by an assessment of my voice facilitated through a combination of vocal exercises plus listening to my voice whilst singing a song of my choice. There was also a discussion with regards to my singing goals. Of course I was nervous, but Ian was really supportive and offered fair but motivational feedback on how to proceed towards sustained progress. On this initial lesson Ian guided me towards several excellent educational resources and of particular note was the application ‘VocalizeU’ which I use daily in conjunction with Ian's adviceMy subsequent lessons commence with a discussion/review of current progress and Ian allows as much time as is required to ask questions. This is followed by a warm-up period with technical vocal exercises tailored to my current vocal needs. The session progresses with Ian assessing me performing a ‘work in progress’ song and Ian comments and advises on aspects of technique and performance which, put simply, usually brings about immediate improvement. In each lesson Ian provides fantastic feedback which is constructive; motivating and directly relevant to the intended direction of my personal vocal goals.It is evident that Ian has advanced knowledge and understanding of the physiological aspects of the human voice. He firmly believes that the underlying theories and principles of singing should be understood by his students. He conveys this information at an appropriate level and dispels some myths along the way. Ian also understands my visual learning style and has the tools to deliver his coaching in a manner that really works for me.Finally, Ian clearly believes that everyone can find their voice if they are willing to put in the effort. I'm living proof of this and I always look forward to each lesson where I learn something new to add to my growing knowledge of singing.I have nothing but respect for Ian's ability and would recommend him without question.

Ian is a great teacher. His lessons are informative and inspiring, and his knowledge of singing is very impressive. He's super friendly and easy going too which helps you feel at ease when expressing yourself. Highly recommend giving at least one lesson a try.

My partner bought me vocal lessons as a Christmas gift and I was a bit apprehensive about the idea as I have never had any vocal training before and wouldn't consider myself an amazing singer, however, I very much enjoy doing it. Ian was a great coach- he is patient and flexible and clearly very passionate about teaching. I feel I have gained a great deal of confidence in my abilities and progressed in my range and sound quality in my 4 sessions. I feel that anyone with a passion for singing and desire to improve would benefit from his guidance. I highly recommend him :)
