Grave of Robert Runcie
This former Bishop of St Albans went on to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1980 to 1991. Most people will remember him for presiding over the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, but he was also notable for the Terry Waite hostage crisis in Beirut, campaigning for his release. He welcomed the visit to England of the Pope in 1982, the first since Britain's split with Rome in the 16th century. He also paved the way for the acceptance of female priests into the Church of England. In his early life he served in the Second World War and was awarded the Military Cross for two acts of bravery in March 1945.A good man, laid to rest in a small graveyard on the north side of the Cathedral.
