After watching the old film we felt we had to visit because it is such a heartwarming story. Really interesting old cemetery full of character.

Greyfriars Bobby's grave
No other dog has the heart of Scotland more than Greyfriars Bobby does. As children in the 80s, my sister and I would watch the 1961 Disney film over and over and would beg our mam to take us down from Aberdeenshire to see Jock and Bobbies graves. I'm glad my own children have now had the privilege too. The real story of Greyfriars Bobby may not be accurate to the film but he deserves a wee grave and statue for the joy he brought to us all

Greyfriars BobbyEdinburgh, ScotlandGreyfriars Bobby - An exemplary true story of dog loyalty and devotionGreyfriars Bobby - Greyfriars Bobby is originally a Scottish native dog of the Skye Terrier / Dandie Dinmont Terrier breed, which is currently one of the most popular dog breeds in the world.A gentleman named John Gray came to Erinburgh, the capital of Scotland, hoping for a better life and he adopted a local dog named Bobby.John Gray came to Edinburgh in the hope of a better life but did not find good work and later joined the night watch of the local police force. And he used to walk around with this dog to help him move at night.John Gray died of tuberculosis and was buried in front of Greyfriars Kirk, but Greyfriars Bobby sat next to him. This dog which was not one or two days but 14 years i.e. till his death was next to his master in this cemetery.Which has created one of the stirring history and examples in the world.Bobby used to stay near the grave till his death and as he did not leave the place, everyone arranged for him to stay near the grave. But the townspeople took care of him and sometimes took him to Gryphiers Place, his master's favorite restaurant. In 1867, Edinburgh began to register domesticated dogs as the breed of dogs increased, as Bobby had no guardians. So the Mayor of Dinburgh, Sir William Chambers, registered it on his own initiative and declared it the property of the City Council.Greyfriars Bobby - Greyfriars Bobby died on 14 January 1872 and was buried not far from his master's grave and became known worldwide. When visiting Edinburgh, one cannot miss this place and take a picture with his statue. In 1891 The Dog Aid Society of Scotland erected a plaque next to Bobby's society that read “Greyfriars BobbyDied - 14th January 1872Aged 16 YearsLet his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us allErected By The Dog Aid Society of ScotlandGreyfires Bobby - Died 14th Jan 1872 - Aged 16 - Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all".(May your loyalty and devotion be an example to us all)Based on this true story

The story of loyalty and dedication to one you love, that is the tale of Bobby who remained by his master's grave many years after his death. The statue is a lovely memorial to this little canine and many touch his nose for good luck. From the statue you go into greyfriars cemetery and can see Bobby's grave, along with many beautiful headstones. For potter fans you can also see Thomas Riddels grave, inspiration for Tom riddle in the books. The location is easy to reach and worth having a wander around.

Greyfriars Bobby's grave
Anyone who hasn't visited Bobby has never been in Edinburgh. It is a heartfelt reminder of our mortality and the relationship between humans and dogs. Especially when every gentleman realizes that his four-legged darling is his alone. We continued to the cemetery of course.

Greyfriars Bobby's grave
Always great to see dogs memorialized! The statue draws a lot of attention which then leads you to a beautiful graveyard and church. Walking around Greyfriars is stunningly beautiful and peaceful. In spring with the trees blossoming makes what could be an eerie place absolutely magical. Visit Greyfriars to learn the sweet loyal history of a great dog and drop a stick off at his grave. Just don’t rub the dogs nose! The statue is getting damaged by this.

A story I had heard as a child, nice to finally visit. Overstone slightly by the Harry Potter groups searching for the naming sources for HP characters. A nice wander and views of Edinburgh.
