Considering this place is free, easily one of the best museums for miles. To start with, the building itself is beautiful. The Victorian style is similar to the National History Museum in London and is very impressive. The staff are incredibly helpful. The Sherlock Holmes museum was my main focus and it had a huge range of detailed exhibits. The modern art exhibits were impressive as well. It was really interesting following the museum through and seeing the Portsmouth homes through the ages. A lovely place to visit. Probably minimum of one hour but ideally 2-3 hours to see everything.

Nice little museum, free of charge to enter. Currently has a good exhibition relating to Arthur Conan Doyle and his Sherlock Holmes creation. Well worth popping into if you’re passing.

I really enjoyed the whole experience in Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery. Interesting showpieces of history and culture of Portsmouth. To be honest i expected to see many more things of this museum than 2 floors only. The staff was very kind and helpful. I highly recommend this museum and i will visit it again in the future!

Such a nice Museum. It is like a time machine as it takes one back to the olden days almost literally. My Wife and I went there and thoroughly enjoyed everything inside. There is a section dedicated to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes and it was fun.Best of all, it is free. The staff is very friendly and kind.

Fabulous museum and totally free, even has some parking. Spent well over an hour looking around. Didn't realise Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) was from the area. Nice place to spend some time. We're pleasantly surprised.

Amazing local museum. Local history, paintings, ceramics and furniture, sea life and lots more. Also has excellent shop, cafe and beautiful garden with small play area. AND it is free, just make a donation. We spent 3 hours exploring the 3 floors and still didn't see the totality of it. Amazing place, well worth visit whatever your age as it will bring back memories for older folk and show young ones how we lived in olden days! Excellent disabled access too,- ramps, lift and toilets and staff are lovely.

Six of us. Four kids two adults. Over three floors. Nice rear outdoor space. Small cafe didn't use.A good display of Portsmouth history and social change. Some. Great Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brilliant. Plus it's free. Parking possible but maybe expect to use off Street so have change ready. Good gift shop too. A new visit for this year and it was great. Free to get in. The age was great and lots for the kids to touch and play with.
