I used to live in Sunderland in the early 70s. I loved going to the Air Cadets, learning drill, shooting, exercises and a bit of air experience too. We had an indoor shooting range (25 yards) but also went to Whitburn for long range practice using 303 Lee Enfield rifles - a beast of gun with a painful kick.Back then there was a shortage of jobs in the area so I applied to join the RAF via the RAF Recuiting Office oposite Mowbray Park. It was the best thing I ever did. There were a few of us - a kind of 'Band of Brothers' if you like.RAF Swinderby was where we did basic recruit training. Being in the cadets was an advantage as I could march. I wasn't fit though, we had PT on the first day - a run on the airfield and I was last! I soon got fit though. Took part in Ironman races in Austria and aslo in France. My trade was electronics such as radars, communications and navigation and landing systems. I spent the longest time at RAF Henlow (3 tours). There was a lot of travelling to some interesting places. The then West Berlin was the highlight of my career as we were there when the Wall came down. Cyprus was also a nice posting for obvious reasons.I did a full career of 40 yrs and retired in 2012 as a Warrant Officer ( last serving at RAF Waddington).

111 is a fantastic squadron with great staff and cadets. 111 helped me choose my career path of being a paramedic by sparking my interest in first aid.

Incredible squadron providing entirely unique and life-changing opportunities for young people. The staff team are relentlessly committed to developing and inspiring their cadets and that is what sets them apart. It’s no surprise this squadron was prized as the best in the UK in 2019! It is my great privilege to recommend this squadron wholeheartedly for young people in Sunderland.
