About the Business

Chinese Bell Tower, Nottingham Arboretum, Nottingham | Educational Images | Historic England | A view of the Chinese bell tower (pagoda) in Nottingham Arboretum. It was designed in 1857 by Marriott Ogle Tarbotton as a war memorial and built in 1862. The bell was looted by British troops from a temple in Canton during the Anglo-Chinese war (Opium War) of 1857-61. Two of the cannon were captured at Sebastopol in 1854-55, during the Crimean war, the other 2 are replicas. In 1956 the pagoda was partly demolished and the bell was moved to the regimental museum in Preston.

A beautiful monument in a lovely location but spoilt by a lot of litter after a Saturday night crowd I expect.

Chinese Bell Tower
A harmonious atmosphere interspersed with flower beds, a pond and a great variety of flowers, makes it an amazing experience in nature. I greatly enjoyed walking on paths lined with ample trees while being immersed in the green all around. Chinese Bell Tower looked awesome among the plants as well adding a bit of historical highlights to the whole natural surroundings

I walk around the Arboretum most Sundays with my dog and it's a pity that the Chinese canons get vandalised and graffitied on by people who don't give a damn. A great place to be on a warm or cold sunny day.

Set in the heart of the urban world on Nottingham this monument hides inside one our prestigious parks called the arboretum, with a big pond and some tame wildlife, it's a good place to chill away from the city that is just a few minutes away. Enjoy a picnic on the grounds With the squirrels.

Who knew? A memorial to the opium wars complete with a captured bell from China in 1850s. 4 Russian cannons from another war. Interesting monument although the explanation notice rather judgmental.

A nice free feature in the Nottingham Arboretum, sadly it is a victim of graffiti but not too bad considering it's location. It does feel a little strange being able to go up and just touch/ring such an old monument without it being protected by a red rope.Having looked up the history of this landmark it is possibly not to be proud of why it is here at all but it is beautiful. The bell was looted by British troops from a temple in Canton during the Anglo-Chinese war (Opium War) of 1857-61. Two of the cannon were captured at Sebastopol in 1854-55, during the Crimean war.
