York & North Yorkshire Wheelchair Service

Maybe I was just unlucky because when I went for my assessment I felt bullied and was forced to have a manual wheelchair delivered despite demonstrating that it was impossible to push due to the pain in my shoulders. I also told them that I had bought a manual wheelchair some years before which was much lighter than theirs and had disposed of it because the pain of pushing it was too great.I had tried to get a chair through British Legion but their supplier wanted over £7000 for one. The Wheelchair Centre asked me to get a letter from British Legion stating that I needed a power chair but they could not provide it, which they did but by the time it reached York it had changed to read that I don't need one.Whilst I understand they are under funded, to change the wording to the opposite of what it actually said is nothing less than fraudulent but to then force me to have a manual one is pathetic. All it has done is to stay folded up in my second bedroom, taking up space and gathering dust. I was most relieved to finally get it collected.

From the outside it looks a bit run down and old, however the people and staff who work there are incredibly kind, courteous and helpful. The facilities are perfect for disabled people making it accessible to all.

Have been trying since yesterday to contact them by phone…all you get is a message saying you are next! Joke… two hours waiting yesterday and tried again this morning..appalling customer service! Do they ever answer their phones!!!

They need to remove the caring element from their vehicles,i asked if they could move my power chair for me as i was moving property,no thought in their answer a complete no.i told them to collect the wheelchair i will struggle without.

Service is fantastic from start to finish and staff are very helpful. Thank you to Colin and engineer Chris who managed to fix a wheelchair for a resident who had an urgent appointment.

Admin staff have a god complex. Harmful, arrogant, discriminatory and ableist.

Very polite service, both times I've been here there has been no problems at all.

Was seen after just 5 minutes of waiting. Very friendly staff, very good service overall.

Their site at Rawcliffe has closed. Now at Unit 13, Bleriot Way, YO30 4WU. But also a clinic in Acomb, Cornlands Road, YO24 3WX, on site at the Priory Medical Centre. Wish they'd have communicated this in their appointment letter and saved me 50mins of uneccesary travel in rush hour traffic.
