The ancient church of St Hildas on the Hartlepool Headland dates to the 12th century but evidence indicates an earlier religious building pre dating this to AD640. It's size is an indication of its importance within Christianity in the north-east of England. A very impressive interior as well as exterior. It is well worth a visit.

A hidden gem which we found today. Beautiful 12c church which is clearly much used and loved by the local community. Well worth a visit but check the opening times. Highly recommended.

Amazing church with very interesting history. Vicar was a brilliant tour guide, thank you Verity. Steve the organist was brilliant at explaining the music to our group.

Beautiful Church, friendly church family, and great for a visit to the stunning building during opening times or attending the church services. I can highly recommend the children's services which are generally held once a month (on the 2nd Sunday I think) and my kids love.

We met this gentleman and lovely lady in St Hildas Church Hartlepool, we chatted for 15 - 20 mins and I noticed a set of pipes on the seat, which I now know to be Northumbrian pipes, he was good enough to give us a short tune, which we both thought was brilliantly haunting in that setting, hope you enjoy it

We went on a Friday and it was locked. They make a big thing about the St Hilda connection and the visitor centre but then it's not open. I couldn't find anything on the website about opening times, so we just had to turn up and hope for the best, and we were unlucky. If you're travelling up and down the country, visiting Hartlepool is quite a detour to come up empty. I have since discovered the times on the website are hidden. If you click 'visitors', you get the menu options of 'tour 1' or 'tour 2' which tell you nothing about opening times. However, if you then reclick on 'visitors', the information magically appears. Who would think to do that? Very bad web design. It's open Wednesdays and weekend afternoons until the end of October. They reopen again at Easter.
