Easy to use small rail station allowing easy visits to our beautiful Durham City. Many residents think the city is set up for students only, I personally think there is also a lot here for tourists and also quite a few regular events such as the Lumiere Festival (coming soon November 2023), plus great things to book at the Cathedral. The only problem is how much of a focus our small city has on alcohol, I think there should be more family centered stuff for residents. However if you want to get into the Christmas spirit, here's my historic pub crawl...Start by getting to Vennels Cafe on Saddler street before 4pm, have a bite to eat and your first beer. Move up Saddler street to the Most Haunted pub, The Shakespeare. Next stop, cross Elvet bridge, up old Elvet to the wonderful Dun Cow (our Oldest pub). Backtrack to New Elvet and The Half Moon. Back onto Elvet bridge to The Tin of Sardines (smallest pub) for a gin. Around to the Market Place to visit the Market Tavern. At this point, if you are still standing (I wouldn't be), consider a meal at one of the many great restaurants in this area from Claypath to the Riverside there's plenty in the heart of this historic medieval city to choose from. To continue, pop over Framwellgate bridge, turn left under the rooms of the Curious Mr Fox to find Old Tom's Gin Bar and enjoy another tipple here. Move on up North road to find The Head of Steam, then cross over up Neville Street (a pretty steep hill mind) to collapse inside the welcoming arms of The Angel, a neon punk dream. That's;**Vennels cafe, Saddler St**The Shakespeare, Saddler St,**Dun Cow, Old Elvet,The Half Moon, New Elvet,The Tin of Sardines, Elvet Bridge,Market Tavern, Market Place**Old Tom's Gin Bar, The RiverwalkThe Head of Steam, North RoadThe Angel, CrossgateFor a shorter 16th Century pub crawl, check out the venues in this list I've added a double star to. Good luck, you might see me propped up against a bit of taxidermy wearing a buckfast T shirt.

Village currently with several Universities and students from all over the world. Castle and Park Green is now student housing, can you imagine!? A lot of live sports watching pubs. Pretty river, bridge, castle view.

Seriously crooked behaviour by some of the staff here.If you arrive on time/early for your train “staff reserve the right to deny you access at their discretion” - I happened to have sprinted to the train and they found that “concerning behaviour”…Now will arrive an hour late to my dream quiz tournament because of the appalling service I faced here. Shame on you all…UPDATE: to demonstrate just how corrupted they are - they cover their badges and refuse to give me their name! Seriously?!

A beautiful small town - a bit like a mini York! Love the old cobbled streets and beautiful riverside walk. Would book a table if you plan on eating here in the evenings as every bar and restaurant we went into was packed!

Durham railway station has two entrances. Platform 1 is home to the main entrance, where the southbound trains stop. There are no ticket barriers here and the ticket office is not always open. The Costas coffeeshop has a pleasant seating area. Coming in to Durham by train you get great views of the river Weir and of the cathedral up above.
