I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much. Julia, our tour guide really made it. She spoke loud enough for all to hear and clearly. She was really engaging, and everything she told us was super interesting. She answered all questions well.I would recommend doing the tour as you get so much more out of it and you get to visit the catacombs.

Many famous people are buried in this cemetery.Photography is discouraged however it can be done in a respectful and low key way.Douglas Adams memorial stone had been lovingly decorated with objects that reflected his career and particularly The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.Karl Marx, Litvinyenko, George Michael and Michael Faraday are buried here to name just a few. Very interesting visit. The only negative was that the toilets on site were not the best and the ones on the East side were filthy.

Definitely worth a stop if you're visiting!I was on one of the West Cemetery guided tours and our volunteer guide (I forget her name, sorry!) was very knowledgeable and was passionate about storytelling. I think the guided tour (~1.5h) was definitely worth the additional ~£5 compared to the self-guided tickets (as you get to learn about some of the more prominent people buried there, information about the cemetery's founding and history, as well as access to the catacombs), so I would recommend getting that before visiting (as they do sell out). The East Cemetery is also very nice, and you can fit it into your visit either before or after the tour.

Fascinating experience, made so much better by booking a tour and only an extra £5 so worth every penny, plus you access the catacombs which is only accessible on a tour. We had John as our guide and he knew so much, I could have listened to him all day. I recommend a tour of the West Cemetery and will be back for a tour of the East Cemetery soon. Do some research first so you know the graves to look out for.

“Workers of All Lands Unite”. This is the inscription on the tomb of Karl Marx in London. It was a dream come true when I visited the Highgate Cemetery in North London to pay obeisance at the tomb of one of the great thinkers of our times – Karl marx.I took the underground to the nearest station and then walked about a kilometer and a half to reach the gate of the cemetery. The cemetery is located on the slope of Highgate hill which is a bit steep. There was an entry free and the ensuing walk inside the cemetery was a pleasant experience. They say more than 170000 people including very famous as well as commoners, have found their final resting place there. A must visit for those who revere Karl Marx.

Highgate Cemetery
World famous resting place for a lot of important people, among them Karl Marx and George Michael, also is where the Highgate Vampire hides, people say. A really very well cared cemetery with lots of wonderful tombs and architecture. The tour guide is very knowledgeable. It worth every penny. The only downside is that the centuries-old cedar of Lebanon is no more, but a new and tiny one is on the grow on the very same spot.

Charming & magnificent Victorian memorials with the final resting places of Karl Marx (German: 5 May 1818 – 14 March 1883) was a German-born philosopher, economist, political theorist, historian, sociologist, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. His best-known works are the 1848 pamphlet The Communist Manifesto (with Friedrich Engels) and the three-volume Das Kapital.Mary Anne or Marian, known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era.Douglas Noël Adams (11 March 1952 – 11 May 2001) was an English author, humorist, and screenwriter, best known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Many more fascinating names to discover on a walk around the cemetery that mirror the time & lifestyles of the characters of the Victorian. The combination of architecture, sculptures & nature has a magical charm that will take you back to the splendours of the Victorian era.Three tours are available daily: The tour lasts around 70 minutes and is in English only. The paths are steep and sometimes muddy, so appropriate footwear is advised. The tour guide was informative and knowledgeable.Highly recommend & worth a visit.

This is a fascinating place with a really interesting history. The cemetery is the final resting place for a number of famous individuals and is quite beautiful, in a Gothic way, due to the fact that it was neglected for years and many trees self-seeded amongst the tombstones and vaults. The guided tour is a must and great value (prebook) and proceeds go towards maintaining this intriguing and unique place. There’s a good pub nearby, called The Angel, and Hampstead Heath is an easy walk as well.

Venturing into Highgate Cemetery is like stepping into a living chapter of London's history. Established in 1839 as a solution to the city's overflowing parish burial grounds, this cemetery has grown to be so much more than its initial purpose.Enveloped in Victorian Gothic elegance, every statue, tomb, and mausoleum tells a unique story, encapsulating the design aesthetics of a bygone era. The West Cemetery, with its older, historical plots, is an architectural wonder, urging visitors to dive deep into the annals of time through guided tours. Meanwhile, the East Cemetery, home to the iconic Karl Marx, invites reflective self-guided strolls.Yet, amidst the silent stories of celebrated personalities like George Eliot and Michael Faraday, the true charm of Highgate lies in its ethereal intertwining of nature and sculpture. The wild overgrowth, a serene reminder of nature's reclaiming power, has transformed this resting place into a haven for city-weary souls and curious wildlife alike. The ongoing efforts of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust breathe life into this heritage site, ensuring its tales of yore remain alive and are passed on to newer generations. Their dedicated preservation work and enlightening tours provide visitors with insights into changing societal attitudes towards death and memorialization. In a bustling city like London, Highgate Cemetery stands as a serene reminder of the intertwining of life, death, art, and legacy. It's not merely a place to remember the departed but an invitation to reflect upon the rich tapestry of life itself. A must-visit for anyone looking to find a tranquil corner steeped in history and natural beauty.
