Urquhart Castle
I’ve dreamed of visiting Urquhart Castle since I read a book about the Loch Ness Monster as a kid. The castle not only met but exceeded all of my expectations - it is absolutely awe-inspiring! The views were so beautiful, and it really feels like you’re walking into history when you go through the gate. The ruins are well-maintained, and the informative plaques throughout give great explanations as to what is what. It was a dream come true to visit!

This was one of the personal highlights of our trip to Scotland. I love the old castles anyway, but I teach physics and every spring we have the kids build catapults. As an introduction, I show the NOVA episode where they built two catapults and filmed it at Urquhart Castle. Seeing one of the catapults on site was great. I loved being able to wander the castle freely and resting the little informational signs. For me, at least, it was a don't miss opportunity.

We went using Jacobite Cruises from the Clansman. It was great value for money having the boat tour and castle admission. The castle was great to see and full of amazing history! The views from the castle were stunning.

Quite impressive site with the ruins situated at the lake. The remains spark my imagination of the past. The self guided audio is available at a fee. It is a bit windy there, so better bring more clothes for visiting. There are a few illustrations of the castle history and souvenir shop indoor.

Our family loves how this castle provided a kids activity guide to help engage them even more on the visit. (They watched for Nessie while taking in the sweeping views, too!) Great self-guided info markers throughout, a replica trebuchet on site, don't skip this stop.

Well presented ruin on the shores of Lough Ness. Nice spacious restaurant. Audio available explaining the history of the castle. It's a bit overpriced, though.

For an absolutely spectacular view of Loch Ness, take a bus from Inverness to Urquhart Castle. I recommend going earlier in the day to hopefully avoid crowds. There is also a large cafe and gift shop by the entrance and parking lot.

Urquhart Castle
The only castle ruin we visited in Scotland. It is hidden from the street side but full view from river. It has a interesting history and you can walk through without a guide. It’s worth the trip!

We've been before several times, and it's always a beautiful place to stop. The castle ruins are worth a look on their own, but the real joy is the views you get up and down the loch. The backdrop of the castle and especially on a gloomy day like when we visited, it sets your imagination on fire. There's a decent cafe, a good gift shop and nice toilet facilities. All you need really.
