Amlwch Cemetery

Ive been visiting this cemetery for over fifty years. It’s where generations of my late family, friends and many others I’ve known are lying in rest. It’s where I will eventually lay alongside them. It’s a sad but comforting place. Sad because of the loss of those precious to us. Comforting because in this environment there is calm and peace, a place where love is still very much evidenced by the people who visit and tend devotedly to their loved ones graves. It’s a place where one sometimes meets by chance these visitors, often resulting in shared respectful memories of the deceased thus keeping them in our everyday conversation.The site is usually kept tidy and well maintained by the person(s) responsible for its overall upkeep, although on rare occasions I’ve had cause to be somehat disappointed. I see the cemetery is currently being extended, with a number of workmen on site. I appreciated very much their respectful regard for the area and it’s visitors when I recently spent some time there. I assume the cemetery will keep on expanding for some time yet, and would love for the people who make decisions on its future to consider planting a suitable tree here and there, creating spots of welcome shade and rest for visitors, many who are getting on in years. It would also be lovely to see more naturally occurring wild flowers or the like, areas requiring little or no maintenance.This would help reduce the starkness of the newer parts of the cemetery. And finally, having lost track of the number of times Ive been caught out by flash showers and harsh winds, how I’d love to see a rain & wind shelter constructed, with of course sensitivity to its surroundings.
