About the Business

Kilburn Woods | Forestry England | Experience stunning views and visit the iconic Kilburn White Horse at Kilburn Woods. Kilburn White Horse is the most northerly turf-cut figure in Britain and one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire. It's easily visible from the south, below Sutton Bank, and while it's difficult to get a sense of its scale from the path on the escarpment edge above, there are steps down the side which give a closer view. The horse dates from 1857, when the outline of the horse was marked out by the Kilburn village schoolmaster and his pupils. The horse was then cut into the limestone underneath – to make it more visible today, chalk chippings are added at intervals and the horse is painted every few years to ensure it remains visible for miles around. There are two walking trails at Kilburn Woods, both providing stunning views across the Yorkshire landscape. The White Horse walk climbs the steps beside the White Horse and leads along the top of Sutton Bank along the Cleveland Way, rewarding you with views of Hood Hill and Lake Gormire. Kilburn Walk undulates through mixed woodlands and circles round to reward you with a view of the iconic White Horse. Trail map

Kilburn Forest Car Park
Free, clean parking area with more than 50 spots. Nice picnic area with well maintained benches and tables. Some of the paths are fairly flat to easily wheelchair accessible too.

A reasonable sized car park. I can imagine it gets very busy very quick on weekends, public holidays and during nice weather. Views are amazing on the walks.

Nice walk, great view. Parking is free but it's a steep narrow drive up to it so drive aware! We followed the red route which is about 1.5 mile. The steps up the hill are very steep and will give you leg burn. But it's an amazing view from the top and there is a bench to sit on.From here we followed the path which took us round to the gliders. We were lucky to see on taking off. Its another stunning view all the way around. The route then turns down through the woodlands and back to the car. It is steep in places so wouldn't recommend it for those who struggle walking and it's not pushchair friendly either.Overall its a great walk. I would imagine parts of it could be very slippery in the winter so good walking boots would be recommended

Lovely quiet area. Sit and look at the White Horse and marvel at the gliders that fly above.

Can't fault it. Just below the White Horse but be prepared for a steep walk by the steps to the top. On a clear day the view is well worth it. By the way the car park is free.

Dog Owners and walkers beware these Woods are infested with Ticks the worse I've seen in Yorkshire. Apart from that its a Great car park just below the kilburn white horse with picnic tables . Nice area of woods to walk around or up the steps to the white horse.and watch the gliders taking off No sight of the complete white horse from the car park. Best seen from just outside kilburn village

Good place to park to walk up to the top of the White Horse, but remember not to walk on it, and the steps on the way up are very tedious so be careful!

It is free. Reverse park. Early it is empty, but by mid morning it fills up and people double park, making it difficult if you have to reverse out of a parking space. The steps are a great work out.
