Sub Zero

Sub Zero is the only club on the university of Essex campus so at times it can draw in a fun student crowd without much effort. The music could be better but some good DJ’s have played the venue. It is also a great space with a ton of potential and good smoking area.The venue loses points in two ways. First: Sub only pays its bar tenders minimum wage and for the price of the cocktails it should not be the case. The low wages leads to staff who are quite slow and unmotivated (no fault of their own). In turn, on busy nights it can take 20-30 minutes to get served a drink.However, where Sub Zero really loses its points it the complete abuse of power from the security. I have rarely been to a club with metal detectors let alone a student club and I have NEVER seen a sniffer dog at a nightclub. It is borderline animal abuse when the dog is subject to such an overwhelming environment with loud music. Yet at a whim the security can pull you out of line and turn you away for any reason. Even when there is a £12-£15 cover…I have heard from nearly every student that goes to Sub Zero that there is a clear abuse of power from the security guards there and it has made me feel afraid and unsafe. I knew there are a number of Student Union claims filed against them. I hope the situations are fixed soon, as while I have never experienced abuse from the security I know that it is just a matter of time before a power hungry security guard takes advantage of myself or a colleague.

I’d been a student for 3 years, they give it the big one once you leave, “always welcome back”. They fail to mention that if you join the army after you graduate, you’ll be turned away. It’s a joke. Uni have well and truly done me over, regret studying here.
