Ripon Obelisk

Erected in 1702 and restored in 1781, standing at 82 feet tall and is also a grade 1 listed structure, nestled in the middle of the market square of the beautiful city of Ripon.

It's a lump of stone in the middle of a uneven and frankly dangerous cobblestone square, I'm sure visitors may be impressed if they can stay upright.

We visited Ripon Market place at nine pm to see the historical horn blowing that denotes the setting of the watch which takes place every evening.We listen to the story of how the person of the watch blows their horn, this has taken place since 1809 and the person of the watch blows their horn every night at 9 o'clock to let the people of Ripon know they are safe in their beds that night and then they go to see the mayor of the day and blow the horn outside his home or wherever he may be to let him know that the setting of the watch has taken place.A great piece of local history and to think that it has taken place EVERY night since 1809,Just brilliant!!

Ripon market place square various shops and banks around as well as parking payable. Nice for a day out and a slow walk around the town.
