Formerly The Vine

Halfway down Spicer Street, with your back to the Cathedral, on the left hand side is a former pub, ‘The Vine’. Records show that it closed in 1932, although the brewer's advertising (Benskin’s) on the front is still clearly visible. (The now defunct Benskin’s brewery in Watford High Street was the largest in Hertfordshire until its acquisition by Ind Coope in 1957.)The former pub is now Grade II listed and shares an interesting history with a group of almshouses next door. A nice find in this old part of town.
