The whole experience was surreal. I scheduled an appointment to talk over some career changes I was considering as an alumni. Instead of receiving any useful advice the man essentially spent his time bragging about the power of his LinkedIn account and then refused to add me to his network. His advice was to give up any hopes of returning to study because “my time was up” and I needed to “face the real world” and learn that I couldn’t “have everything the way [I] want it.” I chalk this up to some seriously mistaken class assumptions on his part.He also advised me to “take any job”—any job at all—at L’Oréal (assuming I could get one since it was completely unrelated to my current industry) simply because I live in France, which by the way “is a huge mistake” and “of course [I’m] unemployed.”He then cavalierly told me leave everything and move to England. Regardless of that not being as easy as he made it sound, I stressed again that it was not my desire and that I had serious concerns regarding Brexit. In response, he called me “hysterical.”I left the appointment feeling belittled and even more confused. There was a lot of crying. No useful advice was given and, in fact, I was never even asked about my personal career goals or desired outcomes. As a result of this conversation, I delayed my return to post-graduate studies and my career change by another 4+ years. I will never forget this conversation nor the condescension or arrogance of my counselor.I am only writing this after the time wasted in pursuing my own ambitions because of bad advice and dismissal of my own ambitions. I want people to know that it’s unacceptable for someone to treat you in this way, especially when passing it off as professional expertise. You are not too old to change paths if the one you chose is not serving you. I would never ever use this “service” again.
