Grovely Wood
I love Grovely Woods! Especially when the trees come into leaf and the bluebells are out. To reach the woods by foot from Wilton you walk up through the hollows and follow the track up the hill. When you get to the red brick farm buildings take the track to the right to join the Roman road through the middle of woods, or take the gated path to the left to join the Roman road from the side and to see the best bluebells! There are a couple of ghost stories associated with the woods - the Handsel trees" supposedly mark the resting places of 4 sisters accused of witchcraft. You can reach them by following the Roman road into the woods for about 10 mins-ish. You'll see the largest Handsel tree on your left if you keep an eye out. There are 2 more standing further up on the left (one has fallen over). The woods were very boggy over the winter and a bit of a mess from all the logging but now that spring has arrived they're looking much better but you'll still need wellies / walking boots."

These are really super woods to visit and walk through. Our reason was to find the witch trees. These are easy to find as long as you look to the left about a mile in from the Wilton side and keep to the right hand track from the red brick farmhouse. There is an amazing Roman road to walk on through the centre of the wood with tracks and bridleways leading off the main road. The Handsel witch trees are like finding enchanted trees in the middle of a mainly pine area. They have a mystical energy about them and many people including ourselves leave offerings to one of the trees. A moment of pause and reflection and to feel the energies of the tree and one or two spooky happenings, which when we researched, other people had noticed the same......I will leave it for you to find out.

Great area for a walk or hike. We park on The Hollows road. Good access to the Roman road from here. Able to see the witches trees.

The most beautiful woodland area around. Park down at the Great Wishford end as there is a pub and parking then head up to the Roman road.

Super miejsce tajemnicze drzewaGrovely Woods is one of the largest woodlands in Wiltshire, standing on a chalk ridge near the River Wylye. It has a long history going back to the Iron Age, with both Iron Age and Roman artefacts found in the area, as well as settlements and hillforts nearby.A long Roman road runs through the woods, flanked by an avenue of beech trees and ferns, creating an atmospheric landscape for a peaceful walk.
