My mum was cared for by the incredible staff at Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice, following a terminal diagnosis last November. She was only given weeks to live by the consultant, which I believe would have been true if she remained in hospital. A little over a week following her prognosis, mum was moved to the hospice, we were welcomed by the incredible Dr Scott who sat mum & I down and explained more about her condition then the consultant and nurses could at the hospital.Mum lived for an incredible 10 weeks from her prognosis and I cannot help but to feel and believe this was solely down to the environment of the hospice, the incredible nature of the IPU team and the importance they put on patient comfortability. Whether it was a cuppa at 11pm or some ice cream at 3am, one press of the button and someone would be in as soon as possible to see what she needs.Mum fought her illness with incredible courage and humility, she never wanted to be a bother, whether it was suffering silently in pain or going hungry because she couldn’t stomach any of the food on the menu, without the amazing volunteer staff members giving their time, mum wouldn’t have started trying to eat again if it wasn’t for a volunteer explaining that the IPU staff would worry more if she wasn’t eating, that night another volunteer did a run to Waitrose to get mum a Margarita Pizza because that’s what she was craving in that moment. The evening mum passed away the hospice team were so compassionate and supportive through it all, providing refreshments, checking on us and mum, allowing a rather large amount of us in, there were over 8 of us there throughout the day and evening and after mum slipped away very peacefully, they cleaned her up and removed all the tubes, wires, etc. so we could pay our respects before we left for the night. The ongoing support and contact with the hospice since mum’s passing has been excellent and they very much feel like a big family there, something they describe their patients as, a part of the Sue Ryder family.I do not have a bad word to say about the hospice, it’s paid staff and volunteers, they are all an incredible bunch of people with outstanding personalities and so much love and care to give to patients and their families. If you do have a loved one at the hospice, if you have any issues or wish to celebrate something, please speak to the ward manager because they are there to help and support your family through the difficult times.

My mum was in an NHS hospital with a couple weeks left to live. The conditions were horrible. Proper care and comfort was neglected by staff. I couldn't even speak to a doctor or nurse about what was happening. I couldn't understand what was going on.She got to go to the Thorpe Hall hospice eventually when there was a space free. My last memories with her were peaceful, and her room overlooked a beautiful garden. Not only did they look after her, but they looked after all of us too. I'm really glad Thorpe Hall exists. She passed in the evening. The only thing that was bad was that they were pushing me to choose a funeral director in the morning after she passed. I would have appreciated longer, or a pre warning about the short amount of time I'd be given to choose a funeral director.

An excellent facility. My friend spent the last week of her life here( Summer 4).Cannot praise all the staff and volunteers enough. They couldn't do enough for her and her visitors. She was treated with compassion and dignity to the end.The hospice itself is really nice.Lovely rooms with a view out into the courtyard.Thank you to you all.

I've come to TH from a hospital. I have terminal cancer that is rapidly destroying my body. Yet I feel fine! And that is down to the astonishing level of care provided at TH. Not just care for me but care for those I love. On the hospital ward I was a number and received good, but minimal, care. The ward never went quiet and as a result my symptoms increased exponentially. Not the staffs fault, the system is to blame. Here I am a person and they meet my needs not the requirements of a check list.I could not recommend Thorpe Hall or Sue Ryder charity more highly. All my families fund raising efforts are now directed at raising funds for this amazing facility.
